Postal Workers Union Officials Arrested for Embezzlement

Two union officials were arrested recently on a three-count Indictment charging them in an embezzlement scheme that victimized Local 190 of the American Postal Workers Union in Clifton, U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie for the District of New Jersey recently announced.

John McGovern, 50, of Hawthorne, and Gary Weightman, 53, of Keansburg, the Secretary-Treasurer and President, respectively, of Local 190 of the APWU, are charged with conspiring to embezzle more than $400,000 in union funds as a result of a fraud scheme which existed between at least 2000 and October 2002.

The Indictment charges that McGovern, who as Secretary-Treasurer controlled the financial transactions for Local 190, conspired with Weightman to supplement their postal salaries with sums of money far exceeding their postal worker salaries. McGovern issued to himself more than $140,000 in unauthorized salary payments over a two-and-a-half-year period. McGovern issued to Weightman more than $27,000 in unauthorized salary payments over the same time period. The Indictment further charges that, in addition to excessive salary payments, the defendants also granted themselves another $250,000 in additional income for the purchase of non-existent office supplies, as reimbursement for fictitious out-of-pocket expenses and other personal expenditures on the union’s credit card.
