City Treasurer Charged With Embezzling Almost $600,000
Carolyn Austin, 45, of De Pere, Wisconsin, a former city treasurer, was charged with five counts of felony theft and one count of misconduct in public office for allegedly embezzling almost $600,000 from city accounts. According to the charges, city employees were paid either with a negotiable check or by direct deposit. Austin, who handled the payroll, manipulated the accounts of those receiving checks by creating a duplicate direct deposit in the same amount that was then deposited into one of four accounts she created for herself.
