Secretary to Air Force Chief of Chaplains pleads guilty to embezzling over $130,000

United States Attorney Kenneth L. Wainstein for the District of Columbia announced last Thursday that Maria R. Hartline, who served as a secretary to the Air Force Chief of Chaplains at Bolling Air Force Base, has pled guilty to embezzling over $131,706.26 from the U.S. Treasury through a variety of fraudulent schemes, including: submitting fraudulent claims for overtime; fraudulently claiming to be working while taking annual leave; fraudulently using a government credit card for personal expenditures; and fraudulently submitting voucher payment requests for personal trips. Hartline was able to accomplish her schemes in large part by using her coworkers’ and supervisors’ computer passwords to avoid receiving necessary approval for overtime and travel claims.
